Erica Scrivner, Director
Erica Scrivner is currently the Director of Bands and Music Technology at Carl Hayden Community High School in Phoenix, Arizona. Before receiving her Master of Music: Music Education degree from Arizona State University, she spent nine years teaching high school marching band, winter drumline, and winterguard. Throughout her career, Erica has written drill and designed marching programs for several groups in California, Nevada, and Arizona. Erica received her National Board Certification for Early Adolescents through Young Adults in Music in December of 2018. As a performer, Erica Scrivner has played in a variety of community ensembles and throughout her undergraduate at the University of Nevada, Reno she enjoyed a wide variety of performance opportunities including wind bands, musicals, choir, pep band, and marching ensembles. Erica spent six years as a member of DCI drum and bugle corps including the Santa Clara Vanguard and the Concord Blue Devils, as well as two years marching with WGI Independent A class finalist, eNVision Percussion Theatre. While at Carl Hayden she has grown the Falcon Band Program to include both winter percussion and winter guard opportunities while also establishing a new Falcon Music Technology program. |
Freddy Ochoa, Assistant Director
Freddy Ochoa is a music educator based in the Phoenix metro area whose goal is to provide a quality music education that is accessible to all students, regardless of their background, demographic, or socioeconomic status. Freddy received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Arizona State University in 2019 where he studied with Dr. Christopher Creviston, world-renowned soloist and soprano saxophone chair of the Capitol Quartet. Throughout his collegiate studies, Freddy performed with a variety of groups at ASU including the Jazz Repertory Band, the Wind Ensemble, and the Virtus Quartet, in addition to performing with Breakthrough Indoor at the 2016 WGI World Championships and with the ASU Saxophone Choir at the 2020 North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference. Since 2015, Freddy has been an avid teacher in the marching arts scene in Arizona and has worked with the band programs at Carl Hayden High School, Corona del Sol High School, Chandler High School, Ingleside Middle School, and Akimel Middle School. Currently, Freddy is the Director of Bands and Choir at Carl Hayden High School in Phoenix, Arizona, and the Assistant Director at PUI, where he was a founding staff member in 2016. |
Joel Scrivner, Battery Arranger & Caption-head
Joel Scrivner was born in Albuquerque, NM and graduated from Carson City High School in 2005. He has been teaching drumlines in California, Nevada, and Arizona since 2006, including state championship groups such as McQueen High School and Mesa High School. Joel has also spent time on staff with WGI finalist, eNVision Performing Arts. He is now in his 6th year as percussion writer, arranger, and caption head at Carl Hayden High School and has been teaching at Betty Fairfax High School, also in the Phoenix Union High School District. Joel's performance background includes Allegiance Elite Drum & Bugle Corps (2004), Oregon Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps (2009), and in WGI with Summit Indoor (2008) and WGI finalist eNVision Performing Arts (2009-2010). Joel has been with the group since the first year as a Carl Hayden percussion club and is eager to see PUI's continued growth. |
Shane Finucane, Front Ensemble Coordinator
Shane is a front ensemble educator from Chandler, Az. He is currently working on his Associate of the Arts from Mesa Community College and will be transferring to Ottawa University next fall to finish his music education degree. While at MCC, he has performed with the Community Band, Community Orchestra, Concert Band, Latin Jazz Combo, Jazz Rock Fusion Combo, and Percussion Ensemble. He has had the opportunity to study under Chris Reidy, Robby Carrillo, and Michael King. Shane's marching experience includes Gold Drum & Bugle Corps (2016-17), Vision Indoor Percussion (2016-18), and Vessel Indoor Percussion (2019-20). He has worked with eight high school programs across the valley as a front ensemble instructor as well as serving as a clinician for several more. He currently teaches the front ensemble at Perry High School. Shane is excited for his first season with Phoenix Union Indoor. |
Michael Perez, Battery Coordinator
Michael Perez, joined the Phoenix Union Indoor teaching staff during the 2018 season. He is currently working as the percussion caption head at Westwood High School. He has performance experience in both fall and winter group including Mesa High School Marching Band & Winter Drumline and WestMesa Winter Drumline. Michael has also participated as a member of the NAU Drumline and Breakthrough Indoor Percussion. He is excited to be working with PUI again this season and is thrilled to see the growth and progress of the ensemble. |
Riley Smith, Percussion Technician
Riley Smith is currently finishing his music education degree at Grand Canyon University. He participated in his high school marching band all four years, as well as both the percussion and wind ensemble under Christopher Holley. After graduating from high school, Riley joined the percussion studio at GCU while participating in the Wind Ensemble, Thunderstruck Percussion Ensemble, and the Thundering Heard Pep Band, all under the direction of Dr. Paul Koch. He has marched three seasons of WGI on snare drum at Vision Percussion (2016, 2017, 2018) under Wardell King. Riley is currently on staff at Millennium High School as battery instructor as well as being a front ensemble instructor at Deer Valley High School. He was previously the percussion caption head at Agua Fria High School for the 2017 and 2018 fall seasons where they placed 7th in percussion at state festival. Riley is also an active clinician throughout the Valley for both battery and front ensemble. This is Riley's first year on staff with PUI and he couldn't be more excited to join the team! |
Jeremy Reynoso, Percussion Technician
Jeremy was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona where he attended Marcos de Niza and studied music at Mesa Community College and Arizona State University, where he received a degree in music performance. He has had the opportunity to study with Chris Reidy, Robby Carrillo, Dom Moio, Nick Manson, Lewis Nash, Michael Kocour, and J.B. Smith. Jeremy's marching experience includes ASU Sun Devil Marching Band, Breakthrough Indoor Percussion, and POW Percussion. Jeremy has taught at Marcos de Niza High School as the Percussion Caption Head for 7 years now. He also has experience teaching with Breakthrough Indoor Percussion from 2018-2020, Linea Indoor Percussion, and now teaching as a front ensemble instructor at Carl Hayden Community High School. He also teaches private lessons at Scottsdale Music Academy and gigs regularly with a variety of groups and ensembles in Phoenix, Arizona. Some of the groups he has played with include: Dayweather, Benja Bloom Band, Jay Allan and the Uncommon Good, The Stakes, LuMar, Sunset Voodoo, Hyperbella, Rene Benton, The Getdown, and many more local artists. Jeremy is excited and honored to be a part of the Flux staff and Phoenix Union Indoor for this season and enjoys teaching drums/percussion of all skill levels and ages. |
Athena Linares, Media Manager & Battery Tech
Athena Linares was born in Phoenix, Arizona and is a graduate of Carl Hayden Community High School. She is currently working full time in the medical field while studying nursing at Phoenix College. She has been performing, leading, and instructing percussion since high school and is currently the assistant percussion instructor for the Falcon Marching Band. Athena aged out in 2019 after marching several seasons with Phoenix Union Indoor. As she returns to PUI as a staff member, Athena is looking forward to teaching battery in an indoor setting and is excited to be taking over a Media Manager for the organization. |
Luis Alvarez, Audio Engineer & Sound Manager
Luis Alvarez was born in Phoenix, Arizona. He graduated from Carl Hayden Community High School and is currently attending the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Science to pursue a career in audio engineering. He began his digital audio journey in Carl Hayden's Falcon Music Technology Program and was one of the first two students to graduate after spending all four years in the program that was piloted for Phoenix Union High School District on the Hayden campus. Not only did Luis help to shape the way the program runs today but he was a part of developing the multi-level course curriculum. As a performer, Luis has been in the Falcon Marching Band, Falcon Winter Arts Winterguard, and Phoenix Union Indoor, participating as an artistic performer and live sound engineer since 2016. This will be his first year officially on staff with PUI and he is excited to share his CRAS knowledge with new and developing young audio engineers. Luis will also be creating, mixing, and performing custom audio for the 2020 indoor show. |
